Argentina autoriza uso de soya resistente a la sequía

Instancias regulatorias del país suramericano dieron vía libre a la comercialización de este desarrollo biotecnológico alcanzado por científicos argentinos para la firma rosarina Bioceres.

Como un paso enorme para la biotecnología argentina catalogó el diario Clarín la aprobación, por parte de instancias regulatorias nacionales, de una variedad de soya modificada con el gen HB4 para poder tolerar exitosamente condiciones de estrés hídrico. “Con esta aprobación, Argentina ingresa al selecto grupo de países que consiguieron eventos biotecnológicos en cultivos de interés agronómico, como Estados Unidos (con 40 patentes), China (5), Brasil (1), Cuba (1) e Indonesia (1)”, indicó el rotativo, agregando que “como en otros eventos biotecnológicos, el paso que queda es que lo aprueben las autoridades sanitarias de los países que van a importar estos granos”.

La investigación que produjo esta variedad de soya fue adelantada por el Instituto de Agrobiotecnología, en la Universidad Nacional del Litoral (UNL), con sede en la ciudad de Santa Fe. El punto de partida fue un gen del girasol, que al transferirse a una planta modelo aumentó su tolerancia a condiciones de estrés hídrico, el factor que más limita el rendimiento de los cultivos. El gen HB4 superó los controles sanitarios observados por el Servicio Nacional de Sanidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria (Senasa) y la Comisión Nacional de Biotecnología (Conabia).

Clarín informó también que “luego de patentar este desarrollo, la UNL y el Conicet licenciaron la tecnología a Bioceres, una empresa de biotecnología con base en Rosario que surgió a partir de la asociación de productores agropecuarios de punta, que comenzó los ensayos en cultivos de interés agronómico”. En la fase final de este largo camino, que lleva más de diez años, Bioceres conformó una alianza con Arcadia Biosciences, una empresa de biotecnología de Estados Unidos, “para realizar seis temporadas de ensayos con el evento HB4 en lotes especiales de la Argentina y Estados Unidos, que confirmaron un aumento de rendimiento de hasta un 14 por ciento bajo distintas condiciones de estrés hídrico”.
