La mortalidad que resulta por las complicaciones respiratorias es muy costosa para la industria avícola.
El ave de hoy en día tiene el potencial de crecer de forma muy rápida, pero es más frágil. Por ejemplo, el corazón y los pulmones representan un porcentaje más bajo del peso corporal que el de los pollos de hace 5 o 10 años. Debido a esto, las aves son mucho más susceptibles a los factores de estrés que afectan a los sistemas respiratorio y circulatorio.
