Crecen áreas cultivadas con soya y maíz no transgénicos

Agricultores están optando por variedades tradicionales que son pagadas a mejor precio en algunos mercados

Primas
hasta del 14 por ciento están siendo reconocidas a los agricultores que
decidieron cultivar variedades no modificadas genéticamente de granos como el
maíz y la soya, lo cual prevé que el área cultivada de dichas plantas aumente
en el futuro. La información fue publicada a comienzos de febrero por The Wall
Street Journal
, medio que hace eco de una tendencia
vivida principalmente en Estados Unidos: “más consumidores buscan alimentos no
transgénicos, que sus defensores consideran más saludables y menos dañinos para
el medio ambiente”.

Estas primas son pagadas en algunos casos a
cultivadores en Estados Unidos por parte de intermediarios que luego venden el
grano a procesadores de pienso en Asia. “En EUA, las ventas de cereales,
aderezos para ensaladas, huevos y otros productos libres de
organismos
genéticamente modificados
(OGM) aumentaron 15 por ciento el año pasado, a US$9,600
millones, y estuvieron entre los segmentos alimentarios de mayor
crecimiento, según Nielsen”, afirmó la reputada casa periodística.

Detrás de esta nueva tendencia están compañías de
alimentos procesados, como General Mills y Post Holdings, que han decidido
eliminar ingredientes transgénicos de algunos de sus productos; ingredientes
que por lo habitual venían siendo cosechados con semillas biotecnológicas
desarrolladas por Monsanto Co., DuPont Co. y otras empresas, que por su alto
rendimiento y resistencia a las plagas provocaron la caída de los precios de
los granos en los últimos dos años.

“Las empresas de alimentos pagan más por
oleaginosas y granos no transgénicos debido a su oferta relativamente pequeña y
el costo de separar esos granos de las versiones modificadas que dominan el
cinturón agrícola de EUA”, analiza The Wall Street Journal. En 2014, 94 por
ciento de la soya y maíz cultivados en Estados Unidos eran transgénicos. En el
mundo 28 países han adoptado cultivos biotecnológicos. EUA es el líder con
73.1 millones de hectáreas, seguido por Brasil (42.2 millones) y Argentina
(24.3 millones). Paraguay y Uruguay se ubican séptimo y décimo con 3.9 millones
y 1.6 millones, respectivamente. México tiene 200,000 hectáreas y Colombia
100,000.
