Extractos de levaduras serían una alternativa al uso de antibióticos en la avicultura

Científicos estadounidenses están realizando una investigación sobre el extracto de una levadura alimenticia como alternativa efectiva al uso de antibióticos en la producción avícola.

Según los resultados de estudios realizados por investigadores del Servicio de Investigación Agrícola de EUA, ARS, el extracto de una levadura alimenticia podría servir como una alternativa eficaz al uso de antibióticos en la producción de aves comerciales.

De acuerdo a los primeros estudios se ha sugerido que el extracto de la levadura dietética tiene potencial como una alternativa no antibiótica para disminuir la presencia de patógenos como salmonella y campilobácter en la producción de pavos orgánicos, por tener un efecto estimulante en el sistema inmunitario. Los investigadores han experimentado con 800 codornices japonesas en lugar de pavos por tener un menor costo de alimentación.

Estas codornices se utilizarán como sistema modelo para evaluar tratamientos naturales que podrían ser beneficiosos en la producción de pollos y pavos. Actualmente, la investigación está siendo realizada por Gerry Huff, en colaboración con Irene Wesley, científicos del Centro Nacional de Enfermedades Animales del ARS en Ames, Iowa, EUA.

Hasta el momento, se ha constatado que los extractos de levadura ayudan a aumentar la capacidad del sistema inmunitario para matar bacterias, sin embargo la desventaja es que la levadura podría contribuir a disminuir el peso corporal de algunas aves. La causa sería que la energía normalmente usada para el crecimiento se desviaría al sistema inmunitario. Los investigadores están buscando un equilibrio entre aumentar la reacción inmunitaria y mantener el crecimiento de las aves.
